不要求英语, 但不能一点不会, 最起码像Java参考文档这样的东西还是需要能看懂.
如果你去中国的书店, 我保证你能买到中文版的Java教程(但请不要买影印版).

At least, you should be able to read in English!
中文版的Java教程 is OK, but you'd better read the original.
The beauty of Chinese is that we use existing characters to make-up new vocabularies. This makes education of our children much easier than any other language on earth. Because every Chinese character has meaning inside, which is opposite to a,b,c,..., we can guess the meaning of a new word nice and easy. We can learn the meaning of the new word by context. We use our Chinese dictionaries much less often than native English speakers or others.
The very beauty of Chinese turns out to against us when we need to translate huge amount of new vocabularies in a relative short period of time. The guesswork makes Chinese hard to understand and lack of accuracy.

Another important thing is a timing issue:
1. Huge amount of new vocabulary comes out every day, even every hour.
2. When you are waiting for someone translates it, it is already too old.
3. Different translators have different translations on the same word; they don't have time to get agreed on translation on so many new words. They might never agree with each other on it. Attention: Translation becomes creation of new Chinese word more often than not.
Time, it is the most valuable asset in life. Don't you agree?!

但是楼主也不要太担心啊，对于计算机方面的英语来说还是挺好学的，只要能过大学四六级，再在专业英语方面学用点功夫，足够应付了。
Please don't worry, because computer English is not very hard to study. If you can pass the CET-4 , of course CET-6 is much better, and concentrate a little on computer English, you will perform well without too much trouble.

因为有好多东东都是英文!可想而知一个不懂英语的人怎么能写出一个很健壮的程序来!

As much as saying, I think English is just as a mean but not the way to java studying.The real way is the understanding and handing to the OLE ,OOP and others like this.

学英语就多读多记，没啥窍门。
另外，英语的行文逻辑比较强，真正需要的不是字面意思，而是它要表达的逻辑结构。

正在英国，所有的书都是英文，开始比较郁闷，过段时间速度就快了，只要一直坚持，没有什么问题，我现在学卫星的东西，也都是在图书馆看原版的了

英语确实很麻烦,但只要把它当做一种工具来用就可以了
跟中文一样,
看英文书籍时,最好不要首先把它翻译成中文,从英文的角度去理解

如果你日语学得好,你可以看日文文档.SUN早就有日文文档了.
语言只是一个工具,我们的目的是学习技术.我现在看英文版的javadoc,但到明年SUN的中文版javadoc完成后,不知会有多少人仍然愿意看英文.

my problem is i learn java (and other technical stuff as well) in english from the very beginning. now it is hard for me to understand some chinese technical words. now i am worried whether it metters in the future when i go back to china to do the business...
it is not that i prefer english. i feel it is unfair that it takes me longer to read than my us classmates. there is no chinese textbook around, and buying chinese novels are too expensive in us...don't like reading them online though.
