If your mobile phone support blue tooth/infrared/serial io, and they are near with each other. You can connect two mobile phones via any way, even serial calbe.
But most MIDP implementation in mobile phone only support HTTP connection.
I think you';d better to set up a server which can store and forwards the messages between mobile phones. The server works just like the server in IM system.
Then, your mobile phones can connect to the server through http/tcp/udp.

if your phone support GPRS it will have an IP address.You can use it to setup a communication between two phones.For example the "UDPDatagram".but one phone should to be a server and the other one role a client.you could find the proffect solution on net.
